First of all, let me go on record as stating that men who assault women should be incarcerated and that Harvey Weinstein, on those occasions he allegedly exposed himself to women or demanded sex from them, in exchange for acting roles or other positions in his company, was reprehensible and blameworthy for having done so.
Now, with that solidly stated (notice the underlining and bold text), I invite you to wonder this, along with me: Who, if anyone, ever victimized Harvey Weinstein? Which actresses, if any, convinced Mr. Weinstein that they were attracted to him or that they enjoyed sex with him, in order to be professionally and financially enriched?
I wish, amidst the storm of outrage about his behavior in Hollywood, that Mr. Weinstein would provide us with a few names of beautiful women in Hollywood who flirted with him, touched him intimately or had sex with him, and were then given roles in films and remained “friends” with him. Because those women clearly victimized Mr. Weinstein by playing on his narcissism and need for sex, exacting from him incredibly valuable opportunities.
How about it, Harvey? If you’re reading this, can you help the nation have a more complete discussion about how men and women shamelessly manipulate one another by giving us a short list of actresses who said they fancied you despite you being grossly overweight, having a reputation as a predator and being decades older than they were?
Here’s another request: Could a number of the women who let Harvey Weinstein seduce them, or seduced him, in exchange for a million dollars worth of work or more, and who would do it, again, please ask to be guests on network news shows? Because I know you are out there.
Here’s the reality of the situation: The idea that Hollywood is a cesspool of bad men who are sexual perverts isn’t the whole story. Hollywood is a sex-fueled, two-lane highway of men and women showing spiritual and physical disregard for one another.
And there’s some of Hollywood in every city and town in the world.
I expect angry messages and threatening calls. I always get them when I circle closer to the fact of the matter than a lot of folks can bear.
